My Brilliant Career viewers only have one question on their minds as they watch the new series.

Netflix dropped its sumptuous new adaptation of Miles Franklin’s classic Australian novel My Brilliant Career.

The six-part series charts the highs and low of Sybylla Melvyn’s (played by Philippa Northeast) endeavours to fight against society to become a published author.

After being sent away from her humble home of Possum Gulley in the Australian outback, Sybylla finds herself at the rather well-heeled home of her grandmother Mrs Bossier (Anna Chancellor) and is preparing to be married off to a suitably rich gentleman to pay off her family’s debts.

Despite the designs in place for her, Sybylla has other ideas to focus on her writing.

Nonetheless, during her time at her grandmother’s lavish mansion of Caddagat, she encounters dashing Englishman Frank Howden (Jake Dunn) and charming local farmer and landowner Harry Beecham (Christopher Chung).

So begins a tussle between the two men for the affections of the quirky Sybylla.

Who does Sybylla end with in My Brilliant Career?

Sybylla chooses herself at the end of My Brilliant Career instead of plumping for either of her romantic interests.

She tells Harry in an emotional speech that she can’t be his wife and must focus her energy into writing, believing that were they to marry she would never be sure if she’d fulfil her life’s ambition.

Harry is left crestfallen after he believed that Sybylla would be accompanying him back to his estate of Five Bob, following a year roving to make money as she toiled away as a servant and governess for the McSwat family.

Sybylla says she would end up making him miserable if she became his wife given her devotion to writing.

The ending is in keeping with the novel, which sees Sybylla remaining stalwartly single and it’s unclear whether she does become a successful writer.

In reality, author Franklin never married and continued to write throughout her lifetime and supporting other writers as she sought to form a unique brand of Australian literature.

Her other big literary classic All That Swagger was published in 1936, while some of her other novels include Some Everyday Folk and Dawn (1909), Old Blastus of Bandicoot (1931) and Bring the Monkey (1933).

Franklin even wrote under the pseudonym of Brent of Bin Bin after fearing that none of her newer works would match the success of My Brilliant Career and might receive poor reviews.
