Charles Spencer’s new book about Princess Diana has already drawn significant attention. Swan Song: Diana, My Sister was released on September 22. The book gives Spencer’s personal account of Diana’s life, marriage, and death.
King Charles features prominently in Spencer’s account. Spencer has made several personal claims about the former couple. They range from an alleged confession Charles made to Diana. According to the Daily Mail, a source said Spencer had stayed quiet for nearly 30 years.
The source added that “what he has to say about the King’s reaction when Diana died is utterly devastating.” Here’s a compilation of those three biggest claims Spencer has made about Charles and Diana in the book so far.
First, Spencer alleges that then-Prince Charles told him Diana would be forgotten ‘soon enough.’ Spencer stated that he and Charles had a furious argument over Diana’s funeral. The dispute involved Prince William and Prince Harry walking behind their mother’s coffin.
Spencer said Diana wouldn’t have wanted her sons to face such a public ordeal. But Charles reportedly continued arguing during a phone call with Spencer. In the memoir, Spencer wrote, “Prince Charles continued his stream of anger, without me interrupting. Then he stopped. I assumed the pause signalled an effort to bring himself under control.”
Diana’s brother added, “But then he unleashed down the phone what I have always taken to be his pent-up contempt for Diana, and his horror that the world was so bowled over by her death. ‘Rest assured,’ he hissed, ‘we’ll forget her soon enough!’”

William and Harry eventually walked behind Diana’s coffin. Her funeral took place on September 6, 1997, six days after her death. Second, Spencer also remembered a phone call he had with Charles just hours after Diana died. Spencer wrote, “The phone rang constantly. Prince [King] Charles caught me as I crossed the landing upstairs.”
He continued, “Unlike my other callers, who were stunned, barely able to articulate their condolences and offers of help, he sounded giddily elated – like a lottery winner, I remember thinking at the time.” The reaction reportedly stayed with him. In a third claim, he recalled a conversation with Diana before her divorce from Charles.
The couple separated in 1992, and their divorce was finalized in 1996. Despite his full support, Spencer said he worried about the public reaction. He told Diana people had “bought into a fairy tale.” He feared they might wrongly blame her for destroying it. Diana allegedly replied, “…My husband is in love with his valet.”

Spencer didn’t identify the valet in the extract, though. After Diana died, Charles eventually married Camilla Parker Bowles in 2005. Charles and Camilla already had a history long before. They first met in 1970 and reportedly got romantically involved.
Camilla married Andrew Parker Bowles in 1973, while Charles married Diana in 1981. But Charles and Camilla stayed close over the years. Their relationship allegedly became a major reason for Charles and Diana’s rocky marriage.
