Netflix Cancels 'Sweet Magnolias' After 5 Seasons as Showrunner Sets Up New Series with JoAnna Garcia Swisher

Sweet Magnolias has been canceled after five seasons, but there’s actually some good news to report.

The beloved series ran for five seasons on the streaming service, with the fifth and final season airing in June 2026. Sheryl J. Anderson developed the series based on the novels by Sherryl Woods and the show starred JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott, and Tony winner Heather Headley in the lead roles.

The news was revealed on the Instagram account for the series. Read the statement below:

All grand adventures must eventually end. And here, dear friends, is where ours does. Sweet Magnolias is now complete with five seasons streaming on Netflix.

To our outstanding cast and crew: You are Serenity. This show would not be what it is without your hard work and dedication and love. Some days were long, some days were hard, many days were rainy. But work is lighter and more joyful when shared with people like you. Whether you were with us for a single day or for all five seasons, you left your mark on our sweet town in South Carolina. Be proud of what you’ve done.

To our partners at DLP Productions: Thank you for starting the party. Thank you for bringing all these pieces and people together. It takes a village, and look at the village you helped amass.

To our partners at Netflix: Thank you for the journey. Seven years! Five seasons! And every day filled with love and collaboration for our story and for each other.

To Miss Woods: Serenity exists because of you. Thank you for creating it, and thank you for entrusting us with it. We hope we did you proud.

And finally, to our viewers: Serenity is for you. Every moment of laughter, of heartbreak, of anger, of joy was for you. While this journey may be complete, the Sweet Magnolias will always be there for you when you need them most. Serenity will always be happy to see you. Keep pouring it out!

Sweet Magnolias showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson will now be working on the new Netflix series Ladies of the House, based on the novel by Lauren Edmondson. JoAnna has joined the project as an executive producer.

So what’s being poured at this family winery? When its charismatic owner dies unexpectedly, his wife and two adult daughters must battle through their issues with each other in order to confront challenges with the business, their extended family, and the men in their lives. Good friends and good wine will aid in the journey to hang on to the winery, but what matters most is that they find a way to hang on to each other.

“I’m thrilled to be embarking on this new adventure with JoAnna and Netflix,” Anderson tells Netflix. “When Jo shared the novel with me, I immediately saw the foundation for a series centered on three women grappling with the complexities of family, friendship, and romance — the kind of stories Jo and I most enjoy telling. I cannot wait to share the Richardson women and their world with Netflix’s global audience.”
