Following the unprecedented success of 1985’s Back to the Future, it was inevitable that Universal would green-light sequels. Creators Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis set about writing two films to be shot back-to-back, concluding their time-travel trilogy.
In 1989, Back to the Future Part II hit cinemas, continuing where the story left off at the end of the iconic first film. Christopher Lloyd’s Doc Brown suddenly appeared in his DeLorean time machine in 1985, having returned from the future. Dressed in strange clothes, he tells Michael J Fox’s Marty McFly and his girlfriend Jennifer that something has to be done about their kids, before the car (thanks to a 21st-century hover conversion) lifts them off to 2015.
The darker story sees an older Biff Tannen steal the time machine and change history, creating an alternate 1985 where he rules Hill Valley from his Pleasure Palace Hotel Casino. Gale admitted he based the character in these scenes on future President Donald Trump. What’s particularly fun about Back to the Future Part II, is that it takes Marty back to 1955 and the events of the first film, where he and Doc have to avoid their other selves.
Back to the Future Part II is on BBC One at 2:50pm this Sunday afternoon and will be streaming on BBC iPlayer for limited time, alongside the first film.
