Prince William could be the only one to decide whether his feud with Prince Harry ever ends. Speaking to the i Paper, royal commentator Jennie Bond said it would be a ‘tribute’ to Princess Diana ‘if her sons could finally be reconciled on the anniversary of her untimely death.’
But she added, “The anger smouldering inside William – who is known to be a stubborn character – could be much harder to extinguish.” Bond continued that William “feels betrayed” by Harry, “who sold the family secrets and now wants to be allowed back into the fold.”
So, according to Bond “If any truce is to be called, it will be William who does the calling.” Bond’s comments came ahead of Diana’s 30th death anniversary on August 31, 2027. Diana died in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997.
Meanwhile, the brothers’ relationship soured after Harry and Meghan Markle announced on January 8, 2020, that they were stepping back from royal duties. The couple said they planned to split their time between the U.K. and North America while still supporting Queen Elizabeth II.
They kept their HRH titles formally but agreed not to use them publicly. The pair then officially left their royal roles on March 31 that year. They later moved to California. There, they began building a separate life through charity projects and commercial work. Harry later discussed his experience in interviews and in his 2023 memoir, Spare.
The book included his account of a 2019 argument with William at Nottingham Cottage, on the Kensington Palace grounds. Harry alleged that William called Markle “difficult,” “rude,” and “abrasive.” He wrote that during an argument, William first grabbed his collar and tore his necklace.
William then reportedly knocked him to the floor. Harry also alleged that he landed on a broken dog bowl and suffered cuts. The brothers’ separate appearances at The Diana Awards’ 25th anniversary ceremony in March 2024 also came to notice.
The Prince of Wales attended the event at the Science Museum in London in person. He gave a speech and presented awards to young people. Harry, meanwhile, joined later through a video message from California. Still, Harry has said he wants to repair the relationship with his older brother.
In a BBC interview with journalist Jane Hill in May 2025, Harry discussed his family after losing a legal challenge over his U.K. security arrangements. “Of course some members of my family will never forgive me for writing a book, of course they will never forgive me for lots of things, but … I would love reconciliation with my family,” the Duke said.
Harry added, “There’s no point in continuing to fight any more. Life is precious.” His relationship with his father did improve, though. In July this year, Harry and Markle reunited with King Charles at Highgrove, where Charles spent time with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. Harry also met Charles privately at Clarence House for tea in September 2025.
It was their first face-to-face meeting in 20 months. Now, Harry and Markle have returned to the U.K. with their children as private citizens, not working royals. The kids have also started school in Britain. The family is reportedly considering the Cotswolds as a long-term base.
