A castle normally closed to the public is opening its doors this September, giving visitors a rare chance to explore its historic ruins – and there are free family LEGO workshops on offer too
Astley Castle, a historic site near Nuneaton that is typically only accessible as a private holiday let, is throwing open its doors to the public this September as part of Heritage Open Days 2026 – and entry is completely free.
The castle will be open across three days – Friday 11, Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 September 2026, from 10am to 4pm – alongside the neighbouring Astley Church, giving visitors a rare opportunity to explore both landmarks.
Located within an ancient moated site, Astley Castle blends contemporary living accommodation with the historic structure of the ruined castle. Guests can venture inside the award-winning property, where floor-to-ceiling windows look out over the former collegiate church and internal courtyards formed from the castle’s historic ruins.
Free family LEGO workshops with Bricks McGee
A special family programme will run on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 September, when families can take part in free drop-in LEGO workshops with a master builder from Bricks McGee. Running from 11am to 3pm on both days, youngsters can build vibrant Tudor castle gates inspired by Astley Castle using thousands of LEGO bricks. The activity is suitable for ages 4 and over, and children must be supervised by an adult. No advance booking is required.
As part of the same Heritage Open Days event, Astley Church, situated adjacent to the castle, will also be open throughout the weekend. Visitors can discover captivating details about the history of Astley Church, alongside displays celebrating the Astley Village Blacksmiths.
The exhibits have been inspired by the Heritage Open Days 2026 theme, Everyday Histories, which honours local people and their stories. Entry is free, with donations gratefully received to support ongoing tower repairs.
Footpath trails around the grounds offer a wonderful opportunity to delve further into the site’s rich history. Visitors are encouraged to bring picnics and make the most of the surrounding grounds, and well-behaved dogs on leads are also welcome.
Refreshments will be on offer at the Astley Village Reading Room, where hot drinks and light bites can be purchased, with all proceeds going directly towards church funds. Please note that payments are cash only.
As a building conservation charity, The Landmark Trust continues to provide free entry to all public Open Days. Donations help to further its vital work rescuing and preserving historic buildings, training the next generation of craftspeople, and enabling people to engage with Britain’s heritage.

Astley Castle is situated at 1 Church Lane, Astley, CV10 7QN. Free visitor parking is available nearby, with a short walk through the grounds leading to the castle. Those with limited mobility can access dedicated disabled parking closer to the stableyard.
