The R-rated video game adaptation had an amazing opening weekend
Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil had a great opening weekend, grossing $60 million over its first three days in theaters. It’s shaping up to be a box office success, proving that in this modern era of hit video game film adaptations, kids’ movies aren’t the only ones that will be successful.
With an estimated $60 million gross reported by Deadline, Resident Evil officially has the best opening weekend of any Resident Evil or Zach Cregger film. Even though it’s not too surprising that this movie beat the not-as-good older Resident Evil movies, it’s neat to see it do better than Weapons, which turned into quite the horror movie hit last year. It’s also another win for Sony Pictures, which is still seeing the benefits of Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s box office success.
It’s also a testament to the fact that there isn’t just one kind of video game adaptation that can do well in theaters. While A Minecraft Movie and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie were both hits, they were primarily aimed at young children. Resident Evil shows that video game fans will still show up for even a gory, lore-breaking, R-rated adaptation of their favorite franchise if it’s good enough.
