Ryan Gosling is set to go to galaxy far, far away in Star Wars: Starfighter.
Speaking exclusively with SYFY Wire back in 2022, filmmaker Shawn Levy teased his then-mysterious Star Wars project, stating the goal was to make a film full of “visual spectacle and a healthy dose of wish fulfillment, levity and big heart.”
“If you had told me when I was making Big Fat Liar that I would eventually be making Deadpool and Star Wars, I would’ve said, ‘Are you kidding me?! That’s a fantasy, not a goal,'” he continued. “So the fact that I’m getting to paint on these big, rich canvasses, it’s thrilling to me. I don’t ever for a day take it for granted or feel complacent about it.”
As we now know, that movie became Starfighter.
Written by Your Friends & Neighbors creator Jonathan Tropper and starring Academy Award nominee Ryan Gosling (Barbie), the movie is poised to be the first galactic outing not directly tied to the main Skywalker saga.
“While I was making Deadpool & Wolverine, Lucasfilm and Disney said, ‘We want you to do Star Wars, and take it somewhere unexpected,” Levy recalled to Good Morning America at D23. “And I said, ‘Okay, what is it a sequel to? What’s it a prequel to?’ And they were like, ‘Just make it loyal to this franchise you love.’ [So] new characters, new timeframe, new Starfighters, new freighters, new aliens, new droids…They said, ‘Take it where you think it should go,’ and then they backed it up by giving me that freedom.”
