In 2005, Hugo Blick released a brilliant dark comedy on the BBC about the trials of a well-off, mid-life couple, starring Joanna Lumley and Denis Lawson. In 2014, the Canadians remade it with Sex And The City’s Kim Cattrall and Don McKellar (Slings & Arrows) taking the lead roles as a couple looking for their place in later life. 

McKellar plays angsty pop culture columnist Al Jackson while Cattrall is his wife Davina, a former model who works in a gallery and is struggling with the impact of ageing on her looks. Her eye has started wandering from him as a result. It’s a mid-life crisis story, in short, one that’s both written and acted with class, particularly by McKellar, who has the showier part as Al and directed all 12 episodes, too.

As the series begins it’s Davina who’s really questioning their lives together but, by episode two, her questioning sets him thinking too. (Two series)
