Shameless star Elliott Tittensor, who played Carl Gallagher in the UK version of the show, looks totally unrecognisable as he promotes the Shameless cast reunion

Few British television shows have left a mark quite like Shameless. The Channel 4 comedy-drama earned BAFTA recognition and a devoted following thanks to its fearless, unfiltered look at life on a deprived Manchester council estate — a world away from the sanitised dramas dominating British screens at the time.
Created by the acclaimed writer Paul Abbott, Shameless broke boundaries from the moment it first aired, going on to clock up 11 series and 139 episodes across nearly a decade on air, and eventually inspiring a hugely successful American remake across the Atlantic. The programme is set on the fictional Chatsworth council estate in Stretford, Greater Manchester. It centres on the fiercely loyal yet wildly dysfunctional Gallagher family and their close-knit community.
With their chronically neglectful, perpetually drunk father largely absent or unconscious, the siblings get by on their wits, dark humour, and dodgy schemes to keep a roof over their heads.
While the show ultimately grew into a sprawling ensemble piece boasting more than 20 regular characters, the heart of the earlier series lay firmly with Frank Gallagher (David Threlfall), who was the absolute lifeblood of the programme. Frank is a comically dissolute, self-serving, and perpetually inebriated philosopher-king of the estate.
Threlfall famously portrayed him with the “eloquence of a Shakespearean poet but the behaviour of an outlandish clown”. Other key characters featured Fiona Gallagher (Anne-Marie Duff), the eldest daughter who bears the responsibility of bringing up her five younger siblings, Steve McBride (James McAvoy), a middle-class lad who nicks cars, falls madly for Fiona, and becomes drawn into the mayhem of the Gallagher household and the siblings – Lip (Gerard Kearns), Ian (Gerard Kearns), Carl (Elliott Tittensor), Debbie (Rebecca Ryan), and baby Liam (Joseph Furnace).
Throughout the programme’s first series in 2004, Carl actor Elliott actually split the role with his identical twin brother, Luke Tittensor. Elliott assumed the role entirely in the second series after Luke departed due to filming commitments for the British soap Emmerdale.
Elliott continued to play Carl for 109 episodes spanning Series 1–9, subsequently returning to the Chatsworth estate for Series 11.
In the programme, Carl Gallagher is the fourth eldest sibling born to Frank and Monica Gallagher. While he begins the show as a reserved, younger background character, he subsequently developed into a significant central figure with major storylines concerning his troubled childhood, relationships, and life on the estate.
Carl’s distinctive appearance was clearly marked by his fully shaved head and his “estate kid” look throughout his main years on the programme.
Nevertheless, Carl actor Elliot Tittensor, now 36, appears considerably different these days 13 years since he was last spotted on the show. Drumming up excitement for an upcoming Shameless cast reunion in Leeds, Elliot appeared virtually unrecognisable in a video posted to co-star Kelli Hollis’ social media.
Kelli, who portrayed Yvonne in the series, wrote alongside the clip: “Look who’s left you a message.”
Elliot’s appearance had dramatically changed, sporting a thick beard and lengthy hair tucked beneath a beanie.
The actor encouraged supporters to ‘come down’ to the gathering and ‘share a night with us’.
He mentioned the possibility of additional dates being arranged, though that’s “down to Kelli” as she’s the “mastermind” behind the reunion.
Elliot also declared they were “taking their birthright back”, insisting there was “only one original Shameless” in a nod to the American adaptation.
Supporters responded enthusiastically to Elliot’s message, with the post attracting thousands of likes.
Numerous viewers remarked that he had ‘turned into Frank’, with one declaring: “Carl has grown into Frank!”.
Another commented: “Looking like Frank now fella.”
A third observed: “Carl turning in to Frank.”
While a different fan posted: “Yes Carl, looking good dude.”
The live event, billed as “A Shameless Night: An Evening with the Cast of Shameless”, is set to debut at the Carriageworks Theatre in Leeds on October 17, with YouTube personality and presenter Lewis Nicholls hosting.

Since his breakthrough role as Carl Gallagher in Shameless, Elliott has moved on to significant prestige television and film parts, most notably landing a starring role in HBO’s blockbuster fantasy series House of the Dragon.
Silent Witness (2010–2021)
Over the course of a decade, he made guest appearances as the recurring character Scott Weston in the long-running BBC crime drama.
Spike Island (2012)
Just as Shameless was drawing to a close, he took on the lead role of “T*ts” in this British cult comedy-drama revolving around The Stone Roses’ legendary 1990 gig.

Tittensor made his leap to Hollywood cinema by appearing as Highlander 2 in Christopher Nolan’s critically acclaimed World War II epic Dunkirk.
House of the Dragon (2022–2024)
In his most prominent role since Shameless, Elliott portrayed Ser Erryk Cargyll in the Game of Thrones prequel series. In an extraordinary onscreen reunion, he appeared alongside his real-life identical twin brother, Luke Tittensor, who played his onscreen twin, Ser Arryk Cargyll.
Straight Circle (2025)
He joined forces with his brother Luke once more to feature in the award-winning film Straight Circle, which recently claimed top honours at the Venice Film Critics Week.
