Kamakshi Bhaskarla, who is a professional doctor, entered the film industry with the ambition of becoming a popular actress. She gained recognition with the horror franchise “Polimera,” but despite being associated with Telugu cinema for nearly nine years, she says she is yet to achieve the kind of fame and financial stability she had hoped for.
While promoting her upcoming thriller “Agadha,” directed by MS Raju and scheduled to release on August 14, Kamakshi became emotional while speaking about the struggles she faced in the industry and the lack of encouragement for Telugu actresses.
“Since 2019, I have been waiting for the right opportunity. I gave countless auditions, even for small roles. I worked extremely hard to get opportunities in films. Even today, I don’t own a car. I still come on my bike. Now people recognize me on the roads and even follow me. Even the vehicles provided by the production team feel new to me. We come from a middle-class family, so owning a car is a big thing for us,” she said.
Kamakshi also recalled some bitter experiences during her journey. She said there were instances where filmmakers rejected her simply because of the actors she had previously worked with.
“There were instances where people openly said, ‘She acted alongside Satyam Rajesh? Then no, we don’t want her.’ People here even judge you based on whom you have acted alongside. I think that is completely wrong,” she lamented.
Kamakshi also explained why she has largely stayed away from glamorous roles. She said she is more interested in playing characters that represent ordinary Telugu women.
“I don’t like playing the same kind of roles repeatedly. More importantly, I want to portray characters that represent the women in our homes. When my family members watch me on screen, I want them to relate to me.’”
“As a Telugu girl, if I don’t represent Telugu women on screen, then who will? That is why I prefer portraying ordinary women rather than glamorous or queen-like characters,” she added.
With “Agadha” arriving in theatres on August 14, Kamakshi Bhaskarla is hoping that the film will give her another strong opportunity to establish herself as an actress.
