The Strictly results show is pre-recorded after the main show on Saturday night to air the following night – however the result is always leaked online prior to the episode airing
Strictly Come Dancing’s results show has returned for the first time this weekend with its new trio of hosts.
Unlike the main show, the results show is pre-recorded on the Saturday night to air the following night. Inevitably, the result of who goes home is often leaked overnight as audience goers let slip on social media.
This sparks anger among some Strictly fans, who are continually frustrated after accidentally seeing a spoiler, with some not even bothering to watch the results show as a result.
One fan tweeted ahead of tonight: “Nooooooo. Someone just tweeted me who has been eliminated be careful. BBC if you don’t fix this you will continue losing viewers on a Sunday evening, there’s no relevance @BBCStudiosPress Block the leakers.”
While another fumed: “I agree… what’s the point of having it on the following evening, when its leaked…every time..”
A third pointed out: “It’s stupid everyone knows it’s filmed on a Saturday night. Why not have the results show on an hour later after the voting time has ended? It is concerning that every time I’ve seen a spoiler they are 100% correct.”
So should the Sunday results show be scrapped in favour of a live version an hour after the main show?
The results show used to air live on Saturday night until it changed in 2007. Then-BBC 1 controller Peter Fincham decided to move the Strictly results show to a Sunday in order for the BBC to compete better with ITV on that day. It was also extended by an extra 15 minutes from 30 minutes to 45 minutes.
Viewers also used to have more control over the dance-off result and would vote to save someone after both celebrities had danced a second time. However, they went on to introduce the judges vote, with the late Len Goodman instilled as the head judge to make a deciding vote if it was split.
By moving the results show to Sunday, the BBC had to start pre-recording it after the main show on Saturday as they were unable to use the studio space at Elstree on both days.
It comes as fans are equally concerned about whether the new hosting format works.
Emma Willis, Josh Widdicombe and Johannes Radebe took over from Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman, with bosses hoping they’d prove to be a power trio. Yet, while fans are impressed with Emma, they’re unsure over her co-hosts.
“The Strictly producers will be in a bit of a pickle now,” one fan pointed out at the weekend. “The overwhelming view seems to be that Emma is perfect and should host downstairs alone, and Josh should be moved upstairs as he’s way more of a comedic, lighthearted chat sort of host.”
While another commented: “I’m curious to see if they might ‘Rotate or alternate’ the roles in a similar style to the launch show. It’s only Week 1 so there’s time to make changes and it feels very ‘trial and error’ right now.”
