According to rumors, Apple TV is already planning to expand the Silo franchise with a spinoff after season 4. While Apple TV has made no official confirmations about this yet, a spinoff extension of the world of Silo makes a lot of sense. Even from a narrative standpoint, the rumored spinoff might already have an incredible story idea that could logically expand the franchise’s existing lore.
The rumors surrounding the spinoff emerged when an X user (@sigjudge) claimed that the new Silo project is set to go into pre-production next year. Considering how the main Silo series will end its run with season 4 in 2027, the suggested production timeline for the spinoff would make sense.
So far, the Apple TV sci-fi show has resolved many of its overarching mysteries and is all set to reveal the truth about everything from the outside world to the real reason behind the overarching apocalypse. Owing to this, it is hard not to wonder what the rumored spinoff will be about. A closer look at the stories in books, however, might have already paved the way for more stories.
Apple TV’s Rumored Silo Spinoff Might Adapt Hugh Howey’s New Book Trilogy
The original Silo book series has already finished its run. However, Hugh Howey has reportedly been working on a book spinoff series for quite some time. As Howey has himself revealed on multiple occasions, the new book trilogy will center around Silo 40 instead of Silo 18. Its timeline will run from before the events of the first book, Wool, to after the conclusion of the third book, Dust.
If the rumored spinoff, too, follows the timeline, its story will begin long before the events of Silo season 1 and extend beyond that of season 4. The book series will also highlight how Silo 40’s rebellions and struggles against the overarching oppressive system have shaped the events in Silos 17, 18, and 1.
Interestingly, Hugh Howey’s original Silo book trilogy also draws subtle references to Silo 40, hinting at what might have happened in the underground bunker. Silo 40 is revealed to be a completely rogue underground city that somehow managed to cut itself off from Silo 1. While the books never reveal what and who lives in Silo 40, it hints at how its people figured out the truth a long time ago.
When its people did discover the truth, they found a way to rebel and sever Silo 1’s connection to ensure their city was not reset through the Safeguard Procedure. It would be interesting to see how the rumored spinoff will walk through Silo 40’s history and rebellion without repeating the original story. Even its potential connection to Silo 18 and the overarching world from the main series will be fascinating.
How Silo Season 3 Might Have Already Set Up A Silo 40 Spinoff
Towards Silo season 3’s ending moments, Juliette takes it upon herself to not only save Silo 18 but even attempt to protect all the other silos from Silo 1’s tyrannical rule. It seems possible that, in season 4, she might learn about how Silo 40 is already sustaining itself despite being cut off from Silo 1. This could perfectly set the stage for the drama in the potential spinoff.
Like the books, Apple TV’s Silo, too, has only given a glimpse of what lies inside three silos: Silo 1, Silo 17, and Silo 18. Every other silo remains a mystery and little seems to be known about their histories and the people who live in them. This leaves a lot of room for many spinoff and followups to explore the full extent of the post-apocalyptic world in Silo.
While it seems unlikely that every underground bunker in Apple TV‘s Silo will get a separate spinoff, the Silo 40 story seems quite intriguing. If done well, the spinoff could even prove to be as good as the parent series (if not better).
