It’s been three years since Slauson Malone 1 (aka Jasper Marsalis) released EXCELSIOR, but experimental music’s premier one-man ensemble is back today with his first new music since then. Improbably, it’s a Red Hot Chili Peppers cover.
The soft, slow, minimal Californication deep cut “Porcelain” is already one of the more abstract RHCP tracks on record, and Marsalis has pushed it a little farther into the post-Alex G uncanny valley. “Porcelain/ Are you wasting away in your skin?” he sings, his voice processed in a way that accentuates its fragility. “Are you missing the love of your kin? Drifting and floating and fading away…”
