Chennai:Solomon Pappaiah is fondly remembered by Tamil cinema audiences for his memorable screen presence. He made a notable cameo appearance as himself in K. Balachander’s 1994 romantic drama Duet.
Reports indicate that Pappaiah also shot a small role for Shankar’s Arjun-starrer Mudhalvan, though his scenes were ultimately left on the cutting room floor due to runtime constraints.
Later, it was his appearances in two major Shankar directorials, Boys and Sivaji that cemented his popularity among movie buffs.
Despite receiving over 200 film offers in the wake of Sivaji, Pappaiah turned them all down, choosing to remain grounded in his true home: the world of Tamil literature and academic circles.
Yet another reason as to why the renowned Tamil scholar quit acting in films is that he regretted his involvement in the controversial comedy sequence from the movie Sivaji. The sequence featured a heavy amount of colourism and body shaming directed toward the characters Angavai and Sangavai.
Solomon Pappaiah felt immense remorse after realising the offensive nature of the scene and how it insulted historical Tamil names. He took accountability for his mistake and quietly decided never to act in mainstream commercial movies again.
