Charlie Hunnam is literally making his dreams come true.
After all, the Sons of Anarchy alum was compelled to produce the upcoming meta-spinoff Legends following some nighttime nostalgia.
“I’d been having just a lot of dreams about being on set with that cast again,” Hunnam revealed to E! News. “I realized there was something in my subconscious that was yearning to bring that crew back together.”
The Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story star ushered in the project at Sons of Anarchy’s previous network FX, where he’ll reunite with Ron Perlman and Katey Sagal, along with the rest of the biker drama’s cast.
“I had written a spec film. I repurposed that idea basically into this,” Hunnam explained, “but really the desire to get that group of people that I love and this moment in time—that was really important to us.”
Sons of Anarchy was a hit series for the network, cruising through seven seasons before riding into the sunset in 2014 and later spawning the five-season spinoff Mayans M.C.
And now, the SAMCRO crew is returning—with a twist. “When the cast of Sons of Anarchy reunites at a fan convention after more than a decade,” reads the network’s Legends description, “the line between life and art blurs as the fractured brotherhood finds itself up against a real-world threat more dangerous than anything they ever faced in their show.”
For Hunnam, having creative control behind the scenes made all the difference.
“To actually go and play a version of ourselves,” he shared, “and through that, [to] have a voice to actually say and discuss…some of the things that are deepest to our heart and the things that are most tragic to us or most hilarious to us is a great opportunity.”
Meanwhile, SoA creator and Sagal’s husband Kurt Sutter gave his stamp of approval.
“I just want folks to know that Charlie came to me when he was in the process of pitching this to the network to ask for my blessing,” Sutter explained Aug. 20 on his Instagram Story, “knowing that the IP would probably not be able to be invoked for various reasons of legalese stuff. I gave Charlie my full blessing. I wish nothing but the best for him in this project.”
