Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now available digitally, and the release has brought some pretty great bonus material with it.
Along with a gag reel featuring Tom Holland and his co-stars breaking character, clips from the movie’s featurettes have surfaced with our first look at scenes that were left on the cutting room floor.
The gag reel delivers the expected chaos, including messed-up takes, production mishaps, and a funny exchange between Holland and Jon Bernthal. There’s also more footage involving Peter Parker and Yelena Belova in the bath, because apparently that scene had even more to give.
The deleted material is arguably more interesting, particularly for fans wondering how much of Peter’s story changed during editing.
One sequence shows Bernthal’s Frank Castle bringing a badly wounded Spider-Man to the hospital. The footage continues with medical staff cutting Peter out of his Spider-Man suit so they can treat him.
It also clears up a shot that appeared in the TV spots but never made it into the theatrical version. That footage of Spidey receiving an injection takes place during his hospital stay, indicating Peter’s recovery originally received considerably more screen time.
With an extended cut of Spider-Man: Brand New Day planned for a future theatrical release, there’s a chance some of this material could eventually find its way back into the movie.
One mystery that probably won’t be solved, however, is what happened between Spider-Man and The Punisher on Staten Island.
Writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers have admitted they don’t really have an answer either. “I don’t think anyone knows what happened in Staten Island,” Sommers said with a laugh, prompting McKenna to add, “We always had an opening action sequence.
“I think originally it was a bank robbery, and then that turned into this really fun car chase we did with the tank, but it was always Frank blustering into this action sequence in a way that drove Spider-Man crazy.”
It would’ve been fun to see whatever happened on Staen Island, but it sounds like it will just have to live in our imagination.
Between the Spider-Man: Brand New Day gag reel, deleted hospital footage, and other unused scenes now coming to light, the Digital release gives fans a fun look at how much material changed before the movie reached theaters.
Now the big question is how much of it will be restored for the extended cut. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is available now on Digital and arrives on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on December 15.
