And Tom Holland is now the highest-grossing actor ever
Spider-Man’s reign at the box office is over — kind of. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been the top-grossing film at the domestic box office since its release on July 31, but that streak came to an end over the weekend. Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock’s new legacy sequel Practical Magic 2 raked in $30 million over the weekend, taking the top spot. Brand New Day had to settle for the number two spot with $8.4 million.
Still, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is on the verge of another record. Its weekend gross brought it over $935 million domestically, meaning it’s less than $2 million away from topping Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens ($936.6 million) as the highest-grossing film at the domestic box office (which includes the United States and Canada).
Spider-Man: Brand New Day was setting box office records before it even came out. It made $72 million from early preview screenings on its way to a $360 million domestic opening, more than Avengers: Endgame ($357 million). It quickly crossed $1 billion worldwide before becoming the second-fastest movie to hit $2 billion at the worldwide box office (Avengers: Endgame did it faster).
Tom Holland’s fourth solo Spider-Man outing has now grossed over $2.4 billion worldwide, making it the third-highest-grossing film of all time (behind Avatar and Avengers: Endgame, which is about to be re-released in theaters). With Brand New Day‘s box office haul, Holland has now become the highest-grossing lead actor of all time, a title essentially given to whoever has starred in the most big-ticket Marvel movies (and Avatar films, in Zoe Saldana’s case).
Not bad for a guy who’s ready to ditch the red-and-blue onesie!
