Steam is unmatched in its sheer volume of games, including those that are free-to-play. It’s not hard to find perennial chart-toppers like Counter-Strike 2 or breakout live-service hits like Marvel Rivals, but thousands of new games release on Steam every year, and August 2026 has a few notable freebies.
All five games discussed below were released within the last week, at the time of writing. Most are smaller projects from indie developers, and all of them have positive user reviews. With a wide range of genres, there’s a lot of variety in these free new releases from Steam.

My Singing Monsters is over a decade old at this point, stemming from the original monster-collecting and breeding game. Released for free on August 19, the quirky franchise’s latest installment is a rhythm game where players lead a monster through their musical performance for a panel of judges.
My Singing Monsters Karaoke is a lot like the viral hit Trombone Champ, which came out a few years ago. With custom controller support and the ability to upload new songs, My Singing Monsters Karaoke shares a lot of the same appeal, not to mention its wacky characters who perform throughout.
Put Your Internet Sleuthing Skills To The Test In No Results Found
No Results Found takes a decidedly different tack, giving players a PC interface resembling Windows 95, through which a mystery can be solved. Examining photographs, documents, webpages, messages, and more allows players to find out what really happened to the members of the Church of the Nine-Tentacled Octopus.
Evoking real-life cult tragedies like Heaven’s Gate, there has seemingly been a cover-up in the case of 227 churchgoers drowning as part of a ritual. Effectively a point-and-click adventure, No Results Found has a clever focus on rudimentary search engines, allowing players to rifle through results from various fictional websites’ search bars.
Feel The Satisfaction Of Organization With Nudge
If octopus-obsessed cults are a bit much, Nudge might be what worth looking into. It’s an adorable, pixelated organizational game where players place toys and other household items on open shelf space. A big part of the fun is pulling the toys from capsules, making it a surprise which items players need to find a spot for next.
Similar to games like Unpacking, Nudge tells a story with its puzzle gameplay. Playing as Joey, recently graduated from college and dealing with an overbearing mother, the seasons change and new toys are discovered while peeling back the layers of a complicated mother-daughter relationship.
Apple Faces Up Offers Mind-Bending Puzzles
Demonstrating the versatility of the puzzle genre alongside Nudge is Apple Faces Up, a first-person adventure. While exploring the Infinite Library, rewriting phenomena from the past, present, and future will surely blow minds. Rewriting passages in books throughout the library alters the environment.
Players have 13 trials to overcome in Apple Faces Up, each one set in a room with different solutions and mutations. Developed originally in Japanese, there is no English audio track, but subtitles are clear enough to get through the fully narrated adventure.
SURA: Shattered Star Is An Action-Packed New Platformer
SURA: Shattered Star is the highest-octane game of the bunch. It has drawn a lot of comparisons to Katana Zero, and is similarly a pixelated, 2D, side-scrolling, hack-and-slash game. SURA involves plenty of precise movement and melee combos across a handful of sci-fi levels.
The eponymous character is working as a mercenary following her mysterious past in a recently concluded war. On a job, Sura is roped into an investigation into human experimentation, and seems to solve every problem with her powerful katana. Like a lot of indie projects (and the other games above), SURA is rather short, but its platforming and boss fights are strong points.
A short and sweet game is sometimes what’s needed, though, and Steam luckily has them in spades. It’s hard to argue with a price of $0, but these five new releases for August have quality that’s worth more than just a look.
