Introduced in Season 2, Episode 5, “Seeds,” Sydney Sweeney portrayed a 15-year-old bride named Eden Spencer in The Handmaid’s Tale. Eden is a literate, devout traditionalist who was raised to become the most dutiful wife imaginable. In “Seeds,” Eden is arranged to marry Nick Blaine (Max Minghella) in a pious “Prayvaganza” ceremony where the Guardians are gifted wives. During her first night with Nick, Eden sleeps in his bedroom, but they do not consummate their marriage right away.

Once they finally consummate their marriage, June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) discovers notes written in Eden’s Bible. Eden is one of the few women able to read and write, which is illegal under Gilead law. Upon reorganizing their living quarters, Nick asks Eden whether she has been reading the stack of letters at her bedside, and she denies it. When Nick tells her not to touch his property, her forced marriage dissolves into a passionless trap with few escape routes, if any.

Taking out the trash one day, Eden meets the dashing Isaac (Rohan Mead), a new Guardian of the Waterfords. Eden and Isaac share a passionate kiss that Nick apathetically witnesses from the balcony. With infidelity a crime punishable by death in Gilead, Eden races to apologize to Nick and plead for her survival. Although Nick assures Eden that she has nothing to worry about, she wonders why he isn’t affected by her betrayal until she realizes that he is still in love with June. Distancing herself from Nick, Eden continues to spend time with Isaac.

The two star-crossed lovers are captured by ruthless Gilead enforcers and are publicly executed for their criminal adultery and infidelity. Eden and Isaac are placed on a diving board above a swimming pool with heavy chains and armor meant to weigh them down once they enter the water, forcing them to drown.

Just before their execution, Eden is given a chance to atone for her sins and save both her own life and Nick’s. Although Nick implores her to do so, Eden bravely sticks to the beliefs in her head and her heart and willingly dies for the cause of true love. Before she plunges into the water and drowns as a proud martyr, Eden recites a Biblical love poem to Isaac that makes Nick feel immensely guilty about the mistreatment of his child bride during their brief marriage.

Despite being raised to become a traditional wife in Gilead, Eden became the empowered author of her own bittersweet fate. Rather than give a false apology to appease the regime, spare her life and continue living in a dispassionate marriage to Nick, Eden stayed true to herself and died sticking up for her true feelings. In a world where women have no agency or autonomy, Eden frees herself by determining her own fate. The gallant, tragically heroic act had a lasting impact on Serena Joy Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski), who allowed June to raise her and Nick’s baby after witnessing the horrific execution.

One reason Sweeney’s performance feels so natural is that she had no advance knowledge of Eden’s fate. Speaking with Refinery29, Sweeney had no clue where Eden would end up and was just as shocked as the audience, saying:

“I knew she was going to have an ending. I wasn’t exactly sure how it was going to end. There was [possibly], ‘Oh, she could end up running away.’ They weren’t quite sure what direction they were going in. I just knew there was going to be an ending. When I read episode 12, I was completely shocked… I was screaming at the page [while] reading.”

Yet, despite the gravity of Eden’s demise, Sweeney appreciated how far the writing went with her character’s storyline, adding, “I was glad that it went so dark for an ending. Because it’s going to hit a lot of people and have a huge impact.”
