An informal conversation among Andhra Pradesh ministers and Telugu Desam Party MLAs in the Assembly lobbies on Wednesday has triggered fresh political speculation over whether the TDP leadership is considering dropping veteran leaders in the 2029 Assembly elections and replacing them with younger faces.
The discussion initially revolved around the age and fitness of senior politicians, but took a humorous turn when TDP working president and State IT Minister Nara Lokesh referred to veteran TDP MLA Gorantla Butchaiah Chowdary and his fitness.
Lokesh jokingly remarked that despite his advanced age, Butchaiah Chowdary continued to make a style statement by wearing colourful shirts.
He said the veteran MLA still considered himself part of the youth brigade and was even saying that he would contest the next elections.
The discussion then shifted to Proddatur MLA Varadarajula Reddy, who, despite being over 85 years old, continues to maintain his fitness. The leaders noted that he regularly swims, exercises and remains physically active.
Senior minister Farooq also joined the conversation and said he was younger than both Butchaiah Chowdary and Varadarajula Reddy.
He further joked that he was only 20 days younger than Chief Minister and TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu, leaving the others in splits.
But behind the light-hearted exchange, political observers believe there could be a larger discussion within the party about gradually phasing out the older generation and bringing in younger leaders for the next electoral battle.
Butchaiah Chowdary, who has been elected seven times as an MLA, is among the party’s longest-serving legislators.
He was elected from Rajahmundry Rural in 2014, 2019 and 2024 after representing Rajahmundry in earlier terms. His continued electoral success shows the political value that veteran leaders can still bring to the party.
According to a study, as many as 14 MLAs in the 2024 Assembly are above 70 years of age, while only 11 are below 40.
The proportion of MLAs below 40 fell from 11 per cent in 2019 to 7 per cent in 2024, indicating that the present Assembly is, in fact, older than the previous one.
At the same time, the TDP has a sizeable group of younger legislators. Its current Assembly contingent includes leaders such as Adireddy Srinivas, 42, Akhila Priya Bhuma, 36, Aditi Vijayalakshmi Gajapathi Raju, 41, J.C. Ashmit Reddy, 41, and several others in their 30s and 40s.
This mix of experienced veterans and younger leaders could become significant when the party begins its internal assessment of sitting MLAs ahead of the 2029 elections.
However, by 2029, many of the present senior leaders would be considerably older, and the party may reconsider giving them tickets. This is especially significant amid reports that Lokesh could take complete control of the TDP by the next elections.
The recent organisational changes are also being seen as part of the party’s preparations for 2029 and an effort to groom a younger generation of leaders.
Even Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu may have to take a call on whether to contest the next Assembly elections, as he would be nearing 80 years of age.
“This does not necessarily mean that veterans will be pushed aside. Instead, the emerging model could involve younger leaders being given greater electoral and organisational responsibilities, while senior leaders continue to play mentoring and strategic roles,” sources said.
The party could also use the next three years to identify younger leaders capable of taking over constituencies currently represented by ageing politicians.
Such a transition would allow the TDP to retain established political networks while gradually creating a strong second line of leadership.
