Netflix’s political pressure cooker is about to boil over. The first full trailer for The Diplomat Season 4 puts Keri Russell’s Kate Wyler in an ugly position as a secret operation involving the White House threatens to push the United States toward war.
Season 4 picks up after the events of the third season, with Kate facing the consequences of a covert move orchestrated by President Grace Penn, played by Allison Janney, and Vice President Hal Wyler, played by Rufus Sewell.
Their actions against the Russian and British governments have created one hell of an international mess, and Kate is once again stuck trying to keep everything from falling apart.
This time, the trouble isn’t limited to foreign policy. Kate’s already complicated marriage to Hal is caught directly in the middle of the crisis, while her relationship with President Penn has become another dangerous part of the equation.
The official Season 4 logline lays out just how bad things have gotten: “Two marriages threaten to eat each other alive. One catastrophic moment shatters the fragile peace Kate Wyler brokered between the US and UK, as well as the crumbling marriage she’s trying to save.
“While she fights to stem the bleeding, President Grace Penn and VP Hal Wyler’s conspiracy to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon hurtles the United States toward war. Kate and Todd (Bradley Whitford), at best an uneasy pair, unite to stop the Grace-Hal alliance from upending the balance of power abroad and at home.”
That puts Kate in the brutal position of trying to prevent an international conflict while taking on an alliance between her husband and the President. To make matters even more complicated, she’ll have to work with Todd, played by Bradley Whitford, despite the two being far from natural partners.
The eight-episode fourth season also brings back Ato Essandoh, Ali Ahn, Nana Mensah, and Rory Kinnear alongside Russell, Janney, Sewell, and Whitford.
Debora Cahn, who created The Diplomat, returns as showrunner and executive producer. The series is coming off another strong showing with the Emmys, earning 10 nominations this year, including Outstanding Drama Series. Allison Janny also took home a win for Best Supporting Actress.
The Diplomat Season 4 premieres October 15 with all eight episodes.
