‘There were bones everywhere.’
It’s the serial killer case you’ve likely never heard of. In 1996, at the 18-acre Fox Hollow Farm in Indianapolis, a large quantity of human remains were discovered by police who had grown suspicious of the owner, businessman Herbert ‘Herb’ Baumeister, due to his links to several missing men. Married father of three Baumeister fled and took his own life before police had a chance to interview him.
Without police interviews or a suicide-note confession, the case relies on the physical evidence of thousands of bones found at the home and even though there remains a lot of speculation over Baumeister’s MO, the story is no less grimly compelling.
What isn’t in doubt is that Baumeister led a double life, secretly picking up men in gay bars and taking them back to Fox Hollow while his family were away. Combined with extensive victimology, testimony from original investigators and experts, as well as a close look at the large-scale forensic work that continues to this day, the series also considers the social context of the crimes and takes a more critical look at the original investigation.
