The night that changed everything for 14-year-old Taylor Swift

In 2004, Scott and Andrea Swift moved their family from Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, to Nashville to support their daughter, Taylor, in her quest to become a country music singer. Taylor, then 14, had already landed — and walked away from — a prestigious development deal with the biggest record label in town. She was searching for the songwriters and executives who really understood her, and could get past their skepticism about whether a teenage girl could truly connect with listeners. Then the pieces started to fall into place, culminating in one night at a famed Nashville venue that changed everything, writes The Washington Post’s Emily Yahr in her new book, “Taylor Swift: The Debut Years.” It will be published Oct. 6, just before the 20th anniversary of Swift’s debut album.
