The Nottinghamshire chippy named as one of the best in the UK

The fish and chip shop is said to be the best in the town

A Nottinghamshire fish and chip shop is bidding to be crowned the UK’s best takeaway after being named in the UK’s top 40.

Angell’s Fisheries, a regular contender in chippy competitions, has its eye on the ultimate prize as it goes head to head with takeaways across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The businesses, announced by the National Fish and Chip Awards, have impressed judges with their outstanding food quality, customer service, industry expertise and commitment to sustainable practices.

Angell’s Fisheries is Nottinghamshire’s only representative in the category. The oldest chippy in Newark, dating back to 1905, it currently has Sophie and Steven Angell at the helm.

They took over the Barnby Gate shop in 2021 and renovated and relaunched the business in 2022. Last year it got down to the final 10 in the competition. Customers have hailed it the best chippy in the town.

The awards are now in their 39th year and continue to lead the way in improving industry standards and encouraging innovation.

This year, there are 14 categories, including the hotly-contested restaurant of the year, young fish frier, newcomer, mobile operator and one of the profession’s ultimate distinctions, takeaway of the year.

Andrew Crook, president of the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), which runs the awards, said: “As we celebrate the 39th year of the National Fish and Chip Awards, it’s brilliant to see talent, passion, excellent professionalism and dedication to their craft on display. Every year, the Takeaway of the Year standard continues to rise and this new list of top 40 contenders exemplify that.

“It’s the people behind these businesses that make our industry what it is. We are proud to celebrate the owners, teams and young talent whose passion and hard work keep this much-loved tradition thriving. Recognition like this is about far more than trophies — it’s about acknowledging the individuals who go above and beyond for their customers and communities every single day.”

The hopefuls will undergo a rigorous evaluation covering product quality, hygiene, environmental and operational sustainability, customer service, and industry knowledge to ensure the highest standards are upheld from behind-the-scenes operations to the customer experience.

The next round of the competition will involve judges whittling the list down to 20 and then to the final 10. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on February 24, 2027, at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge in London.

Andrew added: “This year we are particularly keen to shine a light on the opportunities our industry offers, from developing lifelong skills to fulfilling dreams of running a successful business.

“It’s a sector that rewards hard work and creates genuine career satisfaction for professionals from all walks of life. We’re proud to champion the next generation of talent as they build on the achievements of those who have come before them and help shape the future of fish and chips.”
