After missing much of his rookie season with an injury, cornerback Christian Gonzalez has been a bright spot for the New England Patriots defense. He made second-team All-Pro in 2024 and was named to the Pro Bowl in 2025, and he seemed to step things up even further in high-pressure situations. In last year’s AFC Championship Game, he recorded a late-game interception, and he was a rare bright spot for the Patriots in the Super Bowl, breaking up three passes and making four tackles.
New England has taken notice. The Patriots and Gonzalez had been negotiating on a new deal throughout the summer, and they’ve settled on a record-breaking agreement: four years, $135 million. It includes $102 million in guaranteed money and a $33 million signing bonus.
Coincidentally, the two highest-paid cornerbacks in the NFL both played in the most recent Super Bowl. Gonzalez’s deal surpasses the one the Seattle Seahawks gave Devon Witherspoon in August, which is worth $132 million over four seasons. The Patriots and Seahawks are also the opening matchup of the 2026 season.

The contract extension marks a sizable raise for Gonzalez. He was still under contract for two additional seasons; he was set to make $2.259 million in 2026 and $18.11 million in 2027.
It’s not a bad pay day for Reggie Johnson, either. He’s the agent of both Gonzalez and Witherspoon. NFL agents are maxed out at 3% of the contracts they negotiate, so Johnson will make just over $8 million as a result of these two deals.
This was the first year Gonzalez was eligible for an extension. The No. 17 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft had skipped much of the Patriots’ voluntary offseason program and was a limited participant in the team’s mandatory minicamp. He suffered a leg injury in training camp that kept him out for two weeks, though he appears to be ready to roll as the new season gets underway.
It took a while for a deal to get done, and Gonzalez wasn’t shy about sharing his disappointment that the extension talks were still in flux with the season approaching. Despite those frustrations along the way, Gonzalez has to be thrilled with how things turned out. It’s not every day you get to sign the largest contract for your position in league history, after all.
