There is arguably no finer time to venture into the countryside than autumn. With golden foliage, the summer warmth behind us and winter’s chill still weeks distant, Birmingham is encircled by scenic trails suitable for walkers of all abilities.
Located near Alcester in Warwickshire, Coughton Court is an impressive Tudor manor house approximately 20 miles south of Birmingham. Operated in collaboration with the National Trust, the location is also renowned for its celebrated circular walk.
This is the Millennium Way Circular, a 6.75-mile loop requiring roughly 2.5 to 3 hours and incorporating sections of the Heart of England Way and Arden Way.

The trail extends from Coughton into the tranquil countryside surrounding Spernall, encountering historic landmarks including the former Church of St. Leonard and Throckmorton Catholic Church, reports Birmingham Live.
The route features rolling pastureland, modest footbridges spanning the River Arrow, and tree-bordered paths edging Alne Wood, with stile-free kissing gates throughout most of the journey.
Windmill Hill Trail.
For a briefer option, this easy 1.5-mile circuit provides a swift, manageable loop situated directly within the estate grounds, requiring approximately 45 minutes to an hour to finish.
Beginning close to the main house, the path crosses the River Arrow before undertaking a brief, gradual ascent up Windmill Hill through a row of trees. At the summit, ramblers are treated to sweeping vistas across the Tudor estate and the rolling Warwickshire countryside beyond, before the route winds back downhill through Timm’s Grove woodland.
Coughton Court and Kinwarton Dovecote Trail.
The most extensive option is an 8-mile heritage trail requiring approximately 3.5 hours to traverse the landscape of the ancient Forest of Arden.
Departing the estate along field paths and tranquil country lanes, the trail encompasses three historic parish churches and portions of the Monarch’s Way before arriving at Kinwarton Dovecote, a rare surviving 14th-century circular dovecote managed by the National Trust.
