The Psychological Tension Of Mel Denisse’s Dark-Pop Single ‘Hunted’ | News

‘Hunted,’ the new single from Mel Denisse, creates an immersive atmosphere that moves freely between alt-rock and alt-pop. It carries the confidence of an artist who seems to have found her place in music and is no longer afraid to venture into darker territory, where some of the soul’s hidden treasures can occasionally be found.

The song takes a more intense path while continuing the journey that has earned Mel  Denisse recognition from music publications and a place on playlists such as Spotify’s All New Rock.

From the opening moments, ‘Hunted’ draws the listener into a multi-layered soundscape. A deceptively easygoing melody runs through the track, while the underlying production gradually begins to shift. Mel Denisse layers low-key basslines with shoegaze synth textures and gritty guitar dissonance. The rhythm section moves with a hypnotic pulse, giving the instrumentation an addictive quality.

At the center of this musical storm is Mel Denisse’s vocal performance. Delivered with a weightless, almost surreal clarity, her voice floats high above the murky distortion below. Her delicate phrasing creates a captivating contrast, while harmonies and ghost-like vocal delays surround the track with a spectral quality that feels almost out of reach.

“It’s a bit of a psychological game, blending obsession, fear, and desire towards someone or something that you are fighting one day, embracing the next. Things aren’t always black and white, and this track explores a lot of those emotions,” she said.

To this writer’s ear, that interplay between darkness and vulnerability recalls early-2000s cult acts such as Darling Violetta, as well as elements associated with Tori Amos and Failure. These comparisons emerge from the song’s combination of alt-rock textures, restrained vocal lines, and dense production. Together, those elements sustain the unease at the center of “Hunted” without overwhelming its emotional tension.

‘Hunted’ turns emotional uncertainty into a tense, constantly shifting track that never loses momentum. Its balance of delicacy and distortion gives Mel Denisse room to explore the space between alt-pop and alt-rock.
