Insight into domestic life with Coleen and Wayne after his sacking from Plymouth Argyle

‘This is my series, are you glad that I let you come on?’ asks Coleen of Wayne at the start of this ten-part domestic insight, setting the cheeky tone for what’s to follow. The Real Rooneys is one of those fly-on-the-wall shows hinged around a time of change, as Coleen’s career heads into the ascendant – she’s designing a range for Primark – while Wayne enters a fallow period in his managerial career.
As the series opens, Rooney has recently been sacked from his job as manager of Plymouth Argyle. This, coming on the heels of turbulent stints at the helm of Derby County, DC United and Birmingham City, means that the former England international will now be spending more time dealing with family life than before – at least, that’s what Coleen hopes will happen.
There’s a feel of family sitcom to that set-up and, suitably enough, the series is also full of rambunctious children: Wayne and Coleen’s four sons Kai, Klay, Kit and Cass, the first of whom has big football dreams of his own. The odd poignant note creeps in, as the strain of the new domestic relationship leads to discussion about time apart.
So, is this the real Rooneys? Who knows. But you can only hide so much in a reality show, so it’s certainly a big part of them as the cameras follow the spirited clan around their Cheshire mansion and away on holidays to Barbados and the Alps. The loss of Wayne’s job isn’t hitting the family budget too hard, then. So real, perhaps – relatable, a little less so. (Ten episodes, eight from launch with two more on 1 October)
