Audiences have been waiting for years to see Miles Morales appear in a live-action Marvel movie, but that’s been impossible due to a specific rule, and it goes away next year. After being created by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli in 2011, the Ultimate universe’s young, Black Spider-Man became a fan-favorite Marvel character.
In the 15 years since his Marvel Comics debut, Miles Morales’ popularity has led to him being a fixture in multiple animated Spider-Man TV shows and headlining his own video game from Insomniac Games. He’s even been the lead of Sony’s wildly successful Spider-Verse animated movies. But through it all, Miles has yet to make his live-action debut.
There was a major campaign for Sony to shift the Spider-Man live-action franchise from Peter Parker to Miles after the reboot with The Amazing Spider-Man was planned or to make him the primary hero in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. Meanwhile, the Marvel Cinematic Universe confirmed Miles existed in this franchise in 2017. Despite these opportunities, a rule has prevented him from coming to live-action.
Marvel Studios is currently not allowed to use Miles Morales due to Sony’s plans for the character in the animated Spider-Verse franchise. Sony has no confirmed restrictions on bringing Miles to live-action, but they seemingly do not want to compete with Holland’s live-action franchise. The good news is this all will change in 2027.
Beyond The Spider-Verse’s Release Clears The Way For Miles Morales’ Live-Action Debut
Marvel Studios’ restriction on using Miles Morales ends the moment that Sony wraps up its Spider-Verse franchise. As it currently stands, that will be on June 18, 2027, when Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse finally hits theaters. The threequel was originally meant to debut in 2024 but has been delayed multiple times.
As long as Sony doesn’t extend plans for the trilogy, Miles will have a clear runway to appear in a live-action movie at last. Until then, since Sony owns the rights to Miles, they’ve instructed Marvel Studios to steer clear. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed as much in 2025, saying “we’ve been told to stay away.”
However, that doesn’t mean the studios are just sitting around waiting until next summer to start dreaming up how and where to bring Miles to the MCU. Feige confirmed earlier in 2026 that plans are underway for Miles’ live-action debut. He envisions a world where they add him to Holland’s franchise, which could mean Miles joins the MCU relatively soon after Beyond the Spider-Verse.
Miles Morales Could Join The MCU As Soon As Spider-Man 5, & Tom Holland Has A Plan
The first opportunity Marvel and Sony have to do a live-action Miles is technically in Beyond the Spider-Verse, if the movie incorporates any live-action elements again. Otherwise, the studios could surprise viewers by showing a teenage Miles as Spider-Man at the end of Avengers: Secret Wars as part of a reset MCU timeline.
Otherwise, audiences could very well see a live-action Miles Morales as soon as in Spider-Man 5. Holland has been a vocal supporter of bringing Miles into the MCU and having his Peter mentor the young web-slinger. He reaffirmed that during the Spider-Man: Brand New Day press tour, saying, “I feel really strongly about [introducing Miles].” Holland knows Miles can carry the franchise forward when he’s ready to hang up the spandex suits.
Sony hasn’t confirmed the status of Spider-Man 5 by giving it a release date, but it is likely to arrive in 2029 or later. That will allow Holland to age up a bit more before Peter needs to help guide another young superhero. It’ll also give Sony and Marvel a bit of a breather to develop the MCU’s take on Miles Morales so he can be great but different from what the Spider-Verse films have done.
