The Walking Dead: Dead City Star Teases Maggie and Luis’ Challenging Future

The following contains spoilers for The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3, Episode 4, “Found/Lost,” which premiered Sunday, August 16, on AMC and AMC+.

The Walking Dead: Dead City‘s Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Luis (Raúl Castillo) haven’t quite sealed the deal on their blossoming romance, but that doesn’t mean a relationship isn’t in the works.

In Season 3, Episode 4, “Found/Lost,” Maggie imagines locking lips with Luis, making him the first man she’s shown having feelings for since her husband, Glenn, died. Maggie quickly pushes aside the desire to feel love again, out of fear of forgetting Glenn and what he meant to her. By the end of the episode, Maggie and Luis are left in an awkward, limbo state of “will-they/won’t-they.”

CBR’s Katie Doll got to talk to Castillo in an exclusive interview, diving into the emotional connection between the two characters. When discussing Maggie and Luis’ future together, Castillo kept things pretty vague, but hinted that this wasn’t just an isolated moment between the two.

“I think that Maggie and Luis will continue to be challenged, and their union will be pushed. Their sort of friendship, I can call it, will be pushed into new territory and challenged in new ways. It’ll bring them closer in ways that I think are really exciting. I hope that audiences will enjoy them as much as I think that Lauren [Cohan] and I did as actors throughout the season.”

Certainly, a hurdle they’ll have to face head-on is the idea of welcoming feelings for a new person as a widow and widower. According to Castillo, Luis would probably feel “conflicted” if Glenn was still a big part of Maggie’s life in the future. But on the other hand, he recognizes that The Walking Dead is in “extreme circumstances that are kind of hard to gauge from our standpoint.”

But for now, Maggie and Luis have put their potential as The Walking Dead‘s newest it-couple on the back burner. They have bigger fish to fry when a sinkhole collapses, taking most of their food supply with them.

Still, Luis is looking for the light at the end of the tunnel. Maggie and Luis have a heart-to-heart about what they hope for themselves individually, now that they’re getting a community up and running. Luis answers, “Someone who appreciates what he has. Someone who matters to someone.”

Castillo expanded on Luis’ response, describing how Maggie and Renata’s community is helping him recover from losing his own loved ones for the first time.

“Losing his family was this major hole in his heart. [Feeling like] he wasn’t able to fulfill his sort of duties as a husband left this black hole in him. He feels unfulfilled. Certainly, this new world gives him hope. I don’t think he’s had hope for a really long time.

Later, Luis asks Maggie what she would’ve answered to her own question. She tells her new companion, “Someone who stops wearing death like it’s the only thing she’s got left. Who laughs without feeling guilty about it. Someone who lets herself live.”

Maybe these two were meant to be together after all.
