Tom Cruise ‘doesn’t make films for opening weekend’ as Digger bombs | Culture

Tom Cruise has said he does not consider the opening weekend when he makes films, as Digger bombed in its first weekend at the box office in North America.

The 64-year-old plays Digger Rockwell, a politically powerful and rich oil tycoon whose drilling operation sets off a serious environmental disaster.

Digger made $8 million from 3,321 North American theaters across the weekend by Sunday morning, according to Variety. The movie had an estimated production budget of up to $180 million.

“You’re going, how can I make a film that hopefully will translate and last and evolve… I never thought of movies, when I’m making them, going ‘opening weekend,'” Cruise told the On Film With Kevin McCarthy podcast episode published the same day as Digger‘s release date.
