A single offhand comment has thrust Too $hort back into the headlines, and not for a good reason. During an Oct. 1 podcast appearance, the 60-year-old hip-hop pioneer made a passing remark about Sean “Diddy” Combs and his current prison stint, and the reaction wasn’t kind. Too $hort has since taken to social media to apologize, revealing that his phone was ringing off the hook after the sound bite went viral.

Too $hort caused controversy when he said he’d attend Diddy’s “coming home” party

Opinion on Combs has been divided for years, but since his arrest and conviction, public sentiment has turned sharply against him. Too $hort apparently didn’t get that memo. On an episode of The TMZ Podcast released Thursday, Oct. 1, the rapper opened up about his longtime friendship with Combs, the mogul’s conviction and what he plans to do once Combs is released from federal prison in 2028. His answer on that last point was blunt: “I’m going to the Puff Daddy coming home party.”

He acknowledged that the 2016 Miami hotel surveillance footage of Combs attacking Cassie Ventura was disturbing, but said he didn’t think Combs deserved to be in prison. He also maintained that he had never seen anything sexual at Combs’ infamous parties.

Too $hort has issued an apology

The comments drew plenty of backlash, and apparently people in his own circle had a lot to say about them. After the clip went viral, Too $hort posted an apology on Instagram, admitting he had been “a little insensitive” with his words. He said people close to him had encouraged him to look more closely at the case.

Too $hort explained that while he’d known about the video of Combs’ attack on Ventura, he hadn’t realized how many women had come forward to accuse Combs of abuse. “I really didn’t know the full extent of the case,” he said.

While Too $hort says he condemns abuse of all kinds, he stopped short of ending his friendship with Combs. In fact, he doubled down on it, calling Combs his “brother” and saying he hopes his time behind bars will change him so he doesn’t abuse anyone again.

A brief overview of Diddy’s case

Combs’ downfall began in late 2023, when Ventura filed a lawsuit accusing him of physical and sexual abuse. He settled within a day, but the filing set off a chain reaction. A wave of similar accusations followed, then a federal investigation, raids on two of his homes, and an indictment.

In July 2025, a jury acquitted him of racketeering and sex trafficking but convicted him on two prostitution-related counts. He is serving a 50-month sentence at FCI Fort Dix in New Jersey, though his time there is rumored to be far more lavish than that of the average inmate.
