Moving, hard-hitting drama starring Olivia Colman and Peter Mullan

This hard-hitting but touching and richly rewarding drama marked the BAFTA-winning writing-directing debut for actor Paddy Considine (The Suspicions Of Mr Whicher, House Of The Dragon). It also marked a rebirth for actress Olivia Colman, until then better known for her comedy roles in hits like Peep Show, and it made headlines when she was overlooked for a BAFTA. 

She is superb as a Christian charity shop worker who befriends Peter Mullan’s angry drunk, while wrestling with her own demons. And now look at her. Colman has not only won four BAFTAs since but also an Oscar (for The Favourite in 2019) and three Golden Globes. It’s a brilliant debut for Considine, too, with more solidly intense work from Mullan and supporting players such as Eddie Marsan, while Colman is an outright revelation. (92 minutes)
