Amid Ubisoft’s ongoing restructuring, which has included layoffs and game cancellations, the publisher is once again drawing attention to two of its most celebrated entries in the Far Cry franchise. Originally developed by Crytek, the first Far Cry launched in 2004, before Ubisoft took the series in a new direction and established it as one of gaming’s biggest open-world shooter franchises.
Over the years, the games have become known for their expansive environments, memorable antagonists, and combat systems that give players plenty of freedom in how they approach encounters. Few entries did that better than Far Cry 3 and its standalone spin-off, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. Released in 2012 and 2013 respectively, the two games remain among the franchise’s most acclaimed installments. Far Cry 3 earned widespread praise for its open-world design, characters, and storytelling, while Blood Dragon took the series in a radically different direction with its retro-futuristic take on 1980s action and sci-fi.
Over a decade later, Ubisoft has confirmed that Far Cry 3: Classic Edition and Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Classic Edition will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 in spring 2027. As ComicBook confirmed, the publisher announced the ports during the Nintendo Direct broadcast on September 9, 2026, finallybringing both to Nintendo’s latest console. However, Nintendo and Ubisoft have not announced exact release dates or pricing.

‘Far Cry 3’ and ‘Blood Dragon’ Are Coming to Nintendo Switch 2
Both games have previously received updated versions for modern consoles. Far Cry 3 Classic Edition was released in 2018 as an enhanced version of the 2012 original. Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Classic Edition followed in 2021 as part of the Far Cry 6 Season Pass, giving the standalone shooter an updated release on modern platforms.
In Far Cry 3, players take control of Jason Brody, a tourist stranded on the fictional Rook Islands after being captured by pirates. Voiced by Gianpaolo Venuta, Jason becomes caught in a conflict involving the island’s pirate forces and the native Rakyat tribe as he attempts to rescue his friends and escape. Blood Dragon, meanwhile, is set in a dystopian 2007 following a nuclear war and stars Sergeant Rex “Power” Colt, a cybernetic super-soldier voiced by Michael Biehn. Colt is sent to an unnamed island to investigate his former commander, Colonel Sloan (Danny Blanco Hall), and encounters killer cyborgs, mutated scientists, and the titular Blood Dragons, giant reptiles capable of firing lasers from their eyes.
