True crime fans will be left hooked on a new two-part documentary about a murder that raised “troubling questions”.
Streaming giant Prime Video has just unveiled a bingeable two-part true crime documentary with the eerie and ominous title, The FitBit Killer. The harrowing series chronicles the events that took place following the murder of Caroline Crouch.
Caroline, a Greek student of British descent, was murdered at her home in Athens in May 2021, during an apparent robbery. Her husband, Babis Anagnostopoulos, survived the incident, but as leads went cold, troubling questions emerged.
New evidence from Caroline’s diary and her smart watch data revealed a much darker mystery about who was there the night she died. Anagnostopoulos, a Greek pilot, was the one to call the police, but almost six weeks later, he confessed to her murder.

Anagnostopoulos had claimed three robbers had broken into the couple’s home and had killed the family dog, before going upstairs and demanding money from the couple while holding them at gunpoint. He claimed one of the robbers had then killed Caroline by suffocating her, but police decided his story did not add up.
Evidence from the couple’s phones and smartwatches revealed a significant discrepancy in the times reported by Anagnostopoulos during his statement. His phone also showed some apps had been running during the time he was allegedly bound and gagged by the ‘robbers’.

Most surprisingly, Caroline’s smart watch showed her heart was still beating at the time her husband claimed she was murdered. The activity tracker on his phone showed him moving around the house while he said he was ‘tied up’, and the recorded times at which data cards were removed from the home security camera also differed from his version of events.
In June 2021, the then 32-year-old confessed to killing his 20-year-old wife and family dog, and in May 2022, he was convicted of the premeditated murder. He was sentenced to life in prison, plus a further 11 years and six months and a hefty fine due to an additional sentence imposed on him for misleading the authorities and killing the family dog.
As for where he is now, he is expected to remain in prison until 2048, according to the documentary. In September 2023, he launched an appeal, which The Guardian said he later dropped without further explanation.
By the time he is released from Greece’s high-security Malandrinos jail, he will be in his late 50s. Anagnostopoulos had claimed he killed his then 19-year-old wife in the heat of the moment, but the coroner who examined his wife’s body described the murder as “both agonising and prolonged”, The Guardian report added.
Anagnostopoulos was described by psychiatrists as suffering from extreme narcissistic disorder. On the night of his wife’s death, he recalled he had grown especially angry when she refused to apologise during a row.
Caroline met Anagnostopoulos when she was 15 years old, and the couple married in July 2019 in Portugal. She had been a student when the pair met on the island of Alonissos, and over the course of their four-year relationship, the couple had enjoyed plenty of fairytale moments, including their spur-of-the-moment wedding.
