The Wirral takeaway is fairly new to the scene but already gaining national attention

A Wirral takeaway is in the running to be named one of the best in the country for the second year running. Kebabchi Mediterranean Grill may still be a newcomer to the scene, but it’s already caught the attention of big names across the UK.
Ilyas Kus, who is originally from Turkey, moved to the UK in search of a new life. Ilyas previously told the ECHO: “I moved to London which is where I lived for a while. I wanted to open a venue that had restaurant quality but takeaway prices. It was difficult to get started in London because the cost of everything is so high.
“We moved to Liverpool because it’s a much better city than London. Liverpool is a better place to raise our kids, its quieter and also a lot cheaper. We thought this would be the perfect place to grow our business.”
Ilyas, who is married with three children, traded life in the “Big Smoke” for Merseyside to turn his dream business into reality. After uprooting his family and relocating to the north west, he began the search for the ideal location to start his new chapter.
Just a few months later, his vision came to life with the opening of Kebabchi Mediterranean Grill on Borough Road in August 2024.
Although still fairly new to the scene, the takeaway has caught national attention, earning a place as a semi-finalist in the 15th British Kebab Awards – the second year in a row after a “Best newcomer” recommendation.
Kebabchi is nominated in the “Best kebab in north of England” category. Ilyas told the ECHO: “We are absolutely thrilled and for the second year in a row. This isn’t just an award nomination – it’s a massive vote of confidence from our customers and the industry, and the people who matter most.
“To be recognised once again among the very best kebab establishments across the entire north is an honour we don’t take lightly. It’s proof that when you serve heart, quality and passion in every wrap and plate, people notice.
“Last year, we made it to the semi-finals and were so proud just to be there. This year we’re back stronger, hungrier, and more grateful than ever.
“Being shortlisted for the 15th anniversary makes it even more special. It’s a milestone year for the awards, and we’re proud to be part of their history.”
In a message to customers, he added: “This recognition belongs to every single one of you who’s walked through our doors, ordered online, recommended us to friends, or left us a kind word. You’re the reason we arrive every morning determined to serve the freshest, most delicious Mediterranean food in Liverpool.
“To our amazing customers across Liverpool and beyond: thank you. Your loyalty is the fuel that keeps our fire burning. This nomination is yours as much as it is ours. We’re through to the semi-finals and whatever the final result, we’re already champions because of you.”
The winners will be revealed at a ceremony in London on February 23, 2027.
