A world famous dance troupe shut down Lark Lane with a Madonna-themed takeover in a bid to bring joy and energy to onlookers. Bob’s Dance Shop is a dance collective from NYC, LA and London, made up of dancers, performers and self-proclaimed “joy activists”.
The group delivers performances all over the world, with notable locations including the New York’s Brooklyn bridge, California’s Coachella festival, Chille’s Lollapalooza festival, Ibiza’s Pacha club and below Big Ben in London just a few of the recent targets.
The Liverpool flash mob took place on May 17 with approximately 30 participants ranging in age from 10 to 60. Four days ago the group shared a clip of the Liverpool performance on Bob’s Dance Shop Instagram page, which boasts 780,000 followers.
At the time of writing the clip has racked up a staggering 700,000 views.
The mob started with a solo dancer making her way through the road, interacting with onlookers who were dinning al fresco in one of the street’s many bars and restaurants. The initial reaction is one of confusion until several more Bobs join the performance.
After a few seconds, the street was filled with performers, with the viral clips overlaid with Madonna’s new track, Danceteria. People already in the area started to record the performance while issuing waves of support, with some dancing along on the footpaths.
The group was a mix of young adults, parents and children, including members of Bob’s Dance Shop, local dancers, friends and family.
The flash mob also doubled as a celebration for the birthday of Laura Macy, one of the Bobs and a Liverpool-based member of the team. Many of the participants were Laura’s dance students and their parents, as well as her own parents and close friends.

The group is known for delivering spontaneous dance performances and flash mobs into public spaces around the world, with the goal of creating unexpected moments of joy, connection and community.
At the heart of Bob’s is the phrase “Be Our Best,” or B.O.B. The idea is that anyone can be a Bob and that it isn’t about being the best dancer or performer in the room.
Being a Bob is about “showing up as your best self, encouraging the people around you to do the same, and using dance as a way to bring people together”.
Vince, founder and creative director of Bob’s Dance Shop, told the ECHO: “The Liverpool flash mob really embodied that spirit.
“We were fortunate to bring the Bobs to Liverpool and create something alongside Laura’s community that brought together different generations, families, friends and dancers for a shared moment of joy.”
