During the spooky season, this Welsh open-air museum will host after-dark events

Just outside Cardiff, St Fagans National Museum of History brings Wales’ vibrant heritage to life with its award-winning open-air collection of historic buildings and immersive exhibits.

Over 40 original buildings from various periods of Welsh history have been carefully dismantled and rebuilt on the 100-acre parkland, including farmhouses, cottages, a school, and a chapel. It’s also home to the re-erected historic Cardiff pub, The Vulcan.

During the spooky season, this hugely popular open-air museum will host after-dark, family-friendly events this Halloween on selected dates, along with guided ghost tours for older children and adults.

This evening event transforms the open-air museum grounds into a Welsh folklore set, and the museum encourages visitors to dress in costume and ‘dance the night away’ at the Haunted House disco.

Drop-in workshops for potion stirring and creepy crafts for the kids will also be available, and they can make a mini wicker man to burn during the finale.

There will also be a street food area alongside a cash-only traditional fairground and the South Wales Makers Market. Tickets are £16, and under-2s go free.

For brave adults, the museum is also hosting St Fagans Castle Ghost Tours operated by Dark Wales Tours, with limited £20pp tickets left. From superstar gigs to cosy pubs, find out What’s On in Wales by signing up to our newsletter here

St Fagans Castle is a 16th-century manor house with foundations dating back to the 13th century, donated to the people of Wales by the 3rd Earl of Plymouth in 1948.

Dark Wales Tours says: “Over the years, many strange things have been seen and heard within the walls of the castle.

“From lights turning on and off by themselves, to voices being heard singing and talking when no one is around, to sightings of children in the windows of areas closed off to the public, children reported wearing old-style clothes.”They add that ghostly figures have been reported not only inside the castle, but also along the lanes and paths, with sightings of strange figures in military uniforms and the constant sight of a lone man walking around the gardens.Find out who these figures could be and what connections they have to this historic site on the St Fagans Castle Ghost Tour.

On this tour, participants will have exclusive night-time access to the ground floor of St Fagans Castle, where a guide will explain the castle’s history and the ghostly happenings. This tour takes you into St Fagans Castle and its gardens. Instead, they have “researched the history of the buildings, and the paranormal stories we tell you are true accounts of what staff, visitors, and guests on the tours have experienced at St Fagans over the years”.
