Almost no director in recent memory has built a stronger and more dedicated following over the last decade and more through multiple franchises than Zack Snyder. Perhaps best known for his nine-year run with the former DC Extended Universe, Snyder brought Henry Cavill’s Superman, Ben Affleck’s Batman, and more into the big-screen spotlight, concluding with the streaming release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League on HBO Max in 2021. Other movies like 2006’s 300 and 2023’s Rebel Moon have come with mixed results, but some of his projects have stood out from the crowd more than others.
In 2011, Snyder took a major step forward by delivering his first movie based on an original story, with the release of Sucker Punch. Led by Emily Browning, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, and Oscar Isaac, the story follows a young woman named Babydoll, whose father frames her for her sister’s death and locks her in a mental asylum to get her lobotomized, leading her to go into her imagination to deal with the trauma. Only boasting a 23% average positive critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, the film only grossed $89 million at the box office, but it still became a cult classic. Now, it appears this story has new life following an update from Snyder.
Joining the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, director/writer Zack Snyder confirmed that he is developing a director’s cut for his 2011 movie, Sucker Punch. Snyder confirmed that the new release is “definitely on the docket” and is currently waiting on licensing to be finalized. The director is also planning to record additional ADR with the cast, and extra new footage for the director’s cut has already been shot.
Snyder has shown no hesitation in developing director’s cuts of his movies, as evidenced by the Justice League saga in 2021. Now, he has a chance to add even more material to a movie that did not perform well at the box office but earned praise for its aesthetics, genre-bending environments, and a soundtrack of heavy-bass cover songs performed by the cast.
While no details have been revealed yet about what will be added to Sucker Punch for the director’s cut, there is some hope that Snyder will deliver the original ending he intended for the movie that Warner Bros. forced him to change. Here, after Babydoll’s lobotomy, she stood up as the basement set broke apart to sing “Ooh Child onstage alongside other characters who died in the movie. Regardless of the specifics, Snyder will now have a chance to revisit a movie often regarded as a cult classic, expanding on the story as he hopes to get his story in front of even more viewers.
