The Naruto anime is filled with powerful shinobi, from prodigies capable of changing the course of battles to seasoned warriors who can take on entire squads alone. Jonin represent some of the most experienced ninja in the Hidden Villages, typically earning their rank through years of training, missions, and combat.

Reaching Jonin status does not automatically make a shinobi one of the strongest fighters in the world. The series features plenty of ninjas whose abilities are impressive in their own right but fall short when compared to characters occupying the upper tiers of Naruto‘s power scale. Even so, their rank reflects genuine skill and experience, making them formidable by ordinary shinobi standards. Naruto is full of capable ninja, and not every Jonin needs overwhelming strength to earn their place among them.

Kurenai’s Genjutsu Isn’t Enough to Compete With Stronger Jonin

Kurenai Yuhi is one of Konoha’s most accomplished genjutsu specialists, but her reputation does not necessarily translate into overwhelming combat power. As the leader of Team 8, she demonstrates strong tactical awareness and considerable knowledge of illusion-based techniques, making her a valuable instructor and capable shinobi.

Her ability to use genjutsu effectively is particularly notable, especially when dealing with opponents who are vulnerable to mental attacks. However, Kurenai’s relatively narrow specialization leaves her with fewer options when facing enemies who can resist or counter genjutsu. Her most memorable confrontation comes against Itachi Uchiha, whose mastery of the Sharingan allows him to turn her own genjutsu against her.

The encounter highlights the enormous gap between Kurenai and Naruto‘s elite fighters, even though it does not diminish her skill as a shinobi. Outside of genjutsu, Kurenai has relatively few major combat showings, making it difficult to place her alongside Jonin with broader arsenals and more impressive battle records to their names.

Hayate’s Brief Career Leaves Plenty of Questions

Hayate Gekko cuts a distinctive figure among Konoha’s Jonin, with his constant coughing and exhausted appearance hiding a highly capable swordsman. As a Special Jonin, Hayate serves as a proctor during the Chunin Exams and later investigates the conspiracy surrounding the invasion of Konoha.

His signature technique, Dance of the Crescent Moon, allows him to create multiple clones while attacking with his sword, demonstrating both speed and precision. Unfortunately, Hayate’s career is cut short before his abilities can be properly explored. His battle against Baki provides the clearest glimpse of what Hayate can do.

Despite being caught in a dangerous situation and fighting an opponent considerably more powerful than most ordinary shinobi, Hayate manages to put up a fight before ultimately being defeated. His limited screen time makes it difficult to judge his complete arsenal, but what Naruto does show establishes Hayate as a skilled specialist rather than a powerhouse. His potential is clear, even if his accomplishments remain relatively modest.

Ebisu Is More Teacher Than Frontline Fighter

Ebisu is best known as a highly experienced instructor who specializes in training promising young shinobi. As Konohamaru’s personal tutor, he demonstrates a strong understanding of chakra control, stealth, and fundamental ninja techniques. He is also a capable combatant, managing to hold his own against Naruto for a brief time during the Chunin Exams.

However, Ebisu’s strengths are largely rooted in teaching and technical knowledge rather than spectacular battlefield accomplishments. Ebisu does have enough experience to earn and retain his rank, but Naruto rarely gives him an opportunity to demonstrate techniques capable of competing with the series’ stronger shinobi.

His encounter with Naruto is particularly revealing, as the young ninja’s unconventional tactics quickly expose the limitations of Ebisu’s approach. While his expertise makes him an important member of the village, ultimately, Ebisu’s value as a mentor is far more apparent than his ability to stand out in a serious fight.

Genma’s Skills Never Get Much Room to Shine

Genma Shiranui is a capable Konoha shinobi who serves as a proctor during the Chunin Exams and later takes on various duties as a Jonin. He is a skilled fighter with strong fundamentals, impressive speed, and a signature senbon that he can use creatively in battle. Genma also demonstrates his experience during the Fourth Great Ninja War, where he works alongside other shinobi in coordinated combat.

Still, his individual abilities rarely receive the same attention as those of Konoha’s more prominent Jonin. Genma’s biggest issue is simply the lack of standout accomplishments attached to his name. He is clearly competent, but Naruto provides relatively few opportunities for him to demonstrate what makes him exceptional.

His skill set is useful for missions and team-based combat, yet there is little evidence that he can compete with Jonin who possess powerful bloodline abilities, devastating ninjutsu, or extensive combat feats. Genma remains a reliable shinobi, but his limited showcase keeps him toward the lower end of Konoha’s Jonin ranks.

Raido Namiashi’s Experience Can’t Make Up for His Limitations

Raido Namiashi is a veteran Konoha shinobi who has spent years carrying out dangerous missions for the village. Recognizable by the distinctive scars across his face, Raido is an experienced swordsman and a capable member of Konoha’s forces. He takes part in several important events throughout the series, including the Fourth Great Ninja War, where he fights alongside other experienced shinobi.

His willingness to enter dangerous battles demonstrates his reliability, even if his individual abilities receive little attention. What separates Raido from stronger Jonin is the absence of a defining technique or major individual victory. He relies primarily on conventional ninja skills and swordsmanship, which makes him dependable without giving him a particularly high ceiling.

During the Fourth Great Ninja War, Raido proves that he can survive and contribute on a large battlefield, but he rarely takes center stage. His experience is unquestionable, yet his limited collection of standout feats makes him difficult to place among Konoha’s stronger Jonin.
