Gemma Chan is no stranger to fashion week. In 2022, the actress added runway model to her resume when she walked L’Oréal Paris’s “Le Défilé” show in Paris. While she may not be returning to the catwalk this year, she was still excited to see the collections at New York Fashion Week. Chan caught up with VF as she got ready for the Calvin Klein Collection Spring 2027 show, the fourth collection by Veronica Leoni.
This year, Ryan Murphy’s Love Story captivated audiences around the country, not just by the depiction of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette’s eponymous love story but with Bessette’s style that exemplified the American minimalism of the 1990s. It’s a favorite era for Chan, who says she likes to “keep things quite simple, but when it comes to the red carpet, kind of anything goes.”
The actress has a busy fall ahead, with Hello in Paris alongside Javier Bardem, and Kate Hudson, and also Josephine, in theaters in November. She stars alongside Channing Tatum in the devastating drama, a Sundance festival darling about parents figuring out how to help their daughter deal with witnessing a terrible crime.

Vanity Fair: You’ve graced hundreds of red carpets over the years, delivering understated looks. How would you describe your personal style?
My day-to-day style is quite low-key, unfussy, and quite easy. But when it comes to dressing for work, events, and red carpets, I like to up the glamour and the drama.
Is your personal style different from when you were starting out across the pond?
Definitely. My sense of style has changed over time. I am sure when I was younger, I wore some things that perhaps didn’t suit me. You know, when you’re just kind of figuring out what works for you.
I remember growing up and just seeing Kate Moss in all the campaigns that she did. I was obsessed with CK One. I wore that all the time throughout my teenage years, that was my go-to fragrance. And Chrissy Turlington and those Eternity ads just really stick out. It was that very elegant but minimal, luxurious vibe that I loved and aspired to.
