In two years time Tom Cruise and Anne Hathaway will be hoping that their combined efforts will steer Days of Thunder 2 to glory, but this weekend saw the two of them post wildly different results on the box office podium with Digger and Verity respectively.
Cruise’s climate-change satire, which was directed by Birdman and The Revenant‘s Academy Award winning filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu, landed with an almighty thud, earning just $8 million from 3,321 North American theaters. With a budget north of $160 million, the Warner Bros. comedy suffered from middling reviews and terrible word-of-mouth, and even in overseas territories, where Cruise’s movies are usually very strong, Digger only managed a paltry $12 million, for a global tally of just $20 million.
Wind back the clock a few weeks and most keen observers of box office statistics would have predicted that Digger would have easily overcome Verity, Amazon MGM’s adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s best-selling novel. However, the year of Anne Hathaway continues with the news that the erotic-mystery follows The Devil Wears Prada 2 and The Odyssey to the top of the domestic box office with an impressive $32.6 million. Also starring Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett, the Michael Slowalter (The Big Sick) directed drama also pulled in $32.6 million at the international box office, for a opening weekend cume of $62.5 million.
In its third frame, Sony Pictures Resident Evil held strong with $12.5 million. The Zach Cregger-directed videogame adaptation crossed the $250 million mark around-the-world this weekend.
The other big news this weekend related to Avengers: Endgame, the re-release of which has now grossed an additional $126 million, taking its lifetime tally to $2.925 billion, and in the process once again surpassing Avatar ($2.923 billion) as the highest grossing movie in history.
