Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Toro Set For Sicario 3

In 2015, long before his dealings with blade runners, sandworms, and loquacious extraterrestrials, Denis Villeneuve delivered one of the best thrillers of the 21st century in the form of brutal War On Drugs thriller Sicario, which introduced the world to Emily Blunt’s hard-as-nails kidnap-response specialist Kate Macer and dynamic DOD duo Matt (Josh Brolin) and Alejandro (Benicio del Toro). In 2018, we got Sicario 2: Day Of The Soldado, a thriller no less scintillating despite the absence of Villeneuve, Blunt, and cinematographer Roger Deakins. Now, per Deadline‘s reporting, an unexpected trilogy capper awaits: Sicario 3 is officially happening, and the original leading trio are all coming back for it.

As Deadline states, Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro, and Josh Brolin are all heading back to the land of the wolves for Sicario 3, which is currently in the works from Black Label Media and Thunder Road. Padraic McKinley, fresh off the release of his Ethan Hawke led period drama The Weight, is set to direct the series’ latest instalment from a screenplay by Peaky Blinders creator and Bond 26 scribe Steven Knight. Franchise creator Taylor Sheridan isn’t expected to have any involvement in the thriller threequel, and plot details — as you may expect — are currently being kept firmly under wraps. It is worth noting however that a script has already been written, or a draft at least anyway, and that said draft was enough to bring Blunt, del Toro, and Brolin all back aboard.

According to Deadline, McKinley and Knight are fine tuning the screenplay at the moment with input from their stars, with the aim being for shooting to get underway potentially as early as the top of 2027. Before any of that, you can check out Padraic McKinley’s The Weight in cinemas now to get a sense of how his gritty filmmaking style lends itself to the Sicario franchise, and there’s a Brolin double to look forward to before the year’s through in the form of sperm whale thriller Whalefall and the third movie in another critically acclaimed, Villeneuve spawned trilogy: Dune: Part Three. We’ll bring you more on Sicar3o (as nobody’s calling it) just as soon as we get it.
