Cinderella’s stepsisters are finally getting their shot at controlling the story, and apparently they’re going to make an absolute mess of the kingdom in the process.
Netflix has released the first official teaser trailer for Steps, an animated musical that flips the classic Cinderella fairy tale by telling the story from the perspective of one of those infamous “evil” stepsisters.
The movie comes loaded with magic, musical numbers, biker trolls, family drama, and a seriously impressive voice cast that includes Ali Wong, Amanda Seyfried, and Daniel Radcliffe.
Wong stars as Lilith, one of Cinderella’s stepsisters, while Seyfried voices Cinderella. Lilith has spent enough time living in her sister’s shadow, so she decides to do something about it by stealing the Fairy Godmother’s magic wand.
Naturally, things go horribly wrong. Lilith and her sister Margot hijack the Royal Ball, but their actions accidentally leave the kingdom under the tyrannical rule of Priscilla.
Fixing the disaster means Lilith has to work with Cinderella, putting the sisters on a wild adventure that forces them to deal with more than their complicated family history.
Along the way, the stepsisters “fight biker trolls, outrun evil henchmen, and escape the Screaming Woods on an epic quest to save the kingdom, but most importantly, their relationship.”
The teaser gives us a taste of the movie’s colorful animation, energetic action, big musical sequences, and the sisterhood story driving the whole adventure. Netflix sums up its Cinderella remix with the tagline, “An unexpected tale that will shatter all expectations.”
The rest of the Steps voice cast includes Stephanie Hsu, Nikki Glaser, Young Mazino, Peter Dinklage, Bette Midler, and WWE star Damian Priest, giving the film an eclectic collection of talent to play with.
The movie is directed by Alyce Tzue and John Ripa, with Emmy-winning actress and comedian Amy Poehler producing alongside Jane Hartwell and Kim Lessing. The story comes from Ava Tramer, James Madejski, Dana Schwartz, Felicia Ho, Riki Lindhome, and Kate Micucci.
Steps joins Netflix’s growing lineup of original animated films, which includes KPop Demon Hunters, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, and Klaus.
There have been plenty of Cinderella retellings over the years, but putting one of the stepsisters at the center and turning her bad decision into a magical quest to save the kingdom gives Steps a fun angle to explore.
Throw in songs, biker trolls, the Screaming Woods, and this cast, and it looks like Netflix is aiming for a fairy tale with plenty of personality.
