2026 has been an excellent year for horror films and it’s looking like 2027 will be a very decent one, too. Curry Barker’s dark and disturbing Obsession turned out to be one of the year’s biggest success stories, but its director isn’t slowing down.
Barker’s next film, Anything But Ghosts, has now been given a release date of 7th May 2027, as reported here by Variety. Focus Features is distributing the film in the US while Universal will be bringing it to international screens, including the UK, in line with the director’s hefty deal with the distributor.
Barker has not just directed Anything But Ghosts, but also co-written it with regular collaborator Cooper Tomlinson. The pair also stars in the film alongside Bryce Dallas Howard, Aaron Paul, Violet McGraw and Chris Reinacher.
Here’s an official logline: When a group of fame-seeking wannabe ‘ghosthunters’ find themselves in over their heads, things spiral wildly and terrifyingly out of control.
Barker certainly has a busy schedule for the next few years to come. Not only does the director have Anything But Ghosts currently in post-production, but is also planning The Texas Chain Saw Massacre reboot for A24. Universal is likely to also push for a sequel to Obsession and Barker has previously said he isn’t totally against the idea. He has also promised that Anything But Ghosts is set in the same universe as Obsession and will include a direct reference to Inde Navarrette’s Nikki’s fate.
The success story of Obsession has been quite something to observe and is somehow still going. The small horror film, made for less than $1m, is still clinging on to the top 10 highest grossing films of the year. Barker’s film grossed an impressive $529m at the global box office and is still one of the most talked about films of the year. It remains to be seen if the film could even get some awards recognition, but that’s still a while away.
