Dan Stevens is an actor with quite an interesting filmography. Having starred in films both big and small that spanned a variety of genres, the actor also has a new big project lined up. It was recently announced that Stevens will be playing the titular character in Amazon Prime Video’s series reboot of RoboCop. The character of Alex Murphy feels appropriate for the actor, who has become known for his B-Movie archetype characters like the Kaiju dentist Trapper in the Godzilla x Kong movies and the genetically enhanced soldier at the center of The Guest. Both of those films were directed by Adam Wingard, and now the creative duo has collaborated again for the latest A24 film, Onslaught.
In an exclusive interview with MovieWeb, Stevens spoke about his role in Wingard’s latest movie. The actor plays evil German scientist Dr. Hans Kammler, a descendant of a Nazi scientist who defected to the United States and helped to start the experimental super-soldier program that is the focus of the film. Interestingly, the concept of an experimental soldier escaping government custody is a very similar premise to Wingard’s 2014 film The Guest. As Stevens would tell us, government conspiracies and secret programs are something that the director has been deeply interested in:
“I mean, it was—it was the fact that it came from Adam, and knowing the lore that this is steeped in, which is very similar to the lore that The Guest is steeped in. It’s. It’s a similar program. It’s a similar history, and some of its real history as well. And Adam has been obsessed with this for a very, very long time. You go around his house, and there’s always some weird YouTube video playing. It’s like, what the hell? So I knew where it was coming from and I knew what he wanted from this, and yeah, it was delicious to get to create this character with him.”
Although Stevens isn’t in the starring role this time around, the fact that the actor is playing a supporting character for Wingard’s film is a testament to how deep their creative relationship goes. This time around, it’s Man of Tomorrow actor Adria Arjona who is the main star of Wingard’s movie, playing a retired army sniper named Celeste who goes up against the super soldiers that are running rampant.
Onslaught is in theaters this weekend, going up against other films like the revenge thriller By Any Means. So far, Wingard’s latest has received mostly positive reviews, with critics praising the movie for its approach to the action genre and how it feels like a homage to the filmography of John Carpenter. The next big release for A24 is Primetime, a thriller based on the television exploits of Chris Hansen, played by Robert Pattinson. The New York-based production company has had an interesting slate of films this year, so it will be interesting to see how it performs at the box office.
