Almost no character under the DC umbrella has faced more turmoil in recent years than Batman, with multiple projects featuring the Caped Crusader still in limbo. Matt Reeves is deep in production on The Batman — Part II, continuing his Elseworlds story with a massive cast, but the movie was delayed from Oct. 2027 and now will not be released until Feb. 2028. Meanwhile, DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran are still struggling to make progress on The Brave and the Bold in the main DC Universe, with no production timeline or cast in place.
Thankfully, one Batman-adjacent project is confirmed to be moving forward, as DC Studios is in development on the animated Dynamic Duo movie. This film will unite two of the most famous Robins in DC history, Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, as DC Studios teams up with the puppet/animation-based Swaybox Studios, using a mix of animation, puppetry, and GCI. Matt Aldrich is writing the script, and Matt Reeves’ 6th & Idaho production company is also involved. Unfortunately, as the DC Universe hopes to expand, this story will now be delayed even further.
Deadline revealed that Warner Bros. is delaying the release of DC Studios’ animated Dynamic Duo movie. Originally set to be released on Jun. 30, 2028, it is now being pushed back by almost three months and will premiere on Sept. 22, 2028. In the midst of the looming merger between Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros. distribution believes this move will make for a good back-to-school animated feature slot for K-12 kids, along with teens and college students as well. It also moves Dynamic Duo to a different date away from Paramount’s Call of Duty movie, which is still set for Jun. 30.
While this news is certainly disappointing, many will find consolation in the fact that it was only delayed by less than 90 days. Additionally, the same report from Deadline (previously reported by InSneider) discussed the cast that will bring this movie to life through voiceover roles.
That cast starts with Mason Thames, best known for his roles in Black Phone and the live-action How to Train Your Dragon remake, as Dick Grayson. The actor has since confirmed the casting via Instagram. Alongside him as Jason Todd will be Logan Kim, recognizable for his work in The Walking Dead: Dead City and the two most recent Ghostbusters movies from 2021 and 2024. Additionally, the movie will feature two different versions of Red Hood, played by Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Hobbit trilogy) and Steve Buscemi (Fargo, Monsters, Inc.). Chris Pine has also reportedly been offered the role of Batman, but this has not been confirmed.Dynamic Duo will now debut in theaters on Sept. 22, 2028.
