Game of Thrones Movie Details: Title, Release Date

Westeros is making the jump from television to the big screen.

Warner Bros. is officially at work on a Game of Thrones-inspired feature titled Aegon’s Conquest, Variety confirmed.

The movie, based on the fantasy universe created by George R. R. Martin, is currently slated for a theatrical release on June 6, 2029. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms director Owen Harris will helm the project from a script by House of Cards creator Beau Willimon.

What Will The Game of Thrones Movie Be About?

Plot details are thin at the moment, but the title does at least tell us we’ll get to see how Targaryen royal Aegon I conquered Westeros before creating the Iron Throne. In other words, an epic tale that deserves to be told on the largest screen possible.

Aegon the Conquerer, as he came to be known, also originated the “Prince That Was Promised” prophecy regarding the eventual war against the White Walkers. Said prophecy was misconstrued by Alicent Hightower several generations later, causing a highly destructive civil war between Rhaenyra Targaryen and her half-brother Aegon II.

“[Aegon I] saw what was coming…and wanted to unify the Seven Kingdoms to be better prepared for the threat that he eventually saw coming from the north,” Martin told Esquire in 2018. “The threat that we are dealing with in A Song of Ice and Fire.”

Willimon’s screenplay will draw on the first three chapters in Martin’s Fire & Blood, an apocryphal history of House Targaryen: “Aegon’s Conquest, “Reign of the Dragons” and “The Heads Had the Dragon – Governance Under King Aegon I.”

When it comes to placing it in the wider Game of Thrones timeline, Aegon’s Conquest takes place about two centuries prior to House of the Dragon season one.

The Targaryen spinoff series (also based on Fire & Blood) will conclude with its upcoming fourth season. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (an adaptation of the Tales of Dunk and Egg), meanwhile, is gearing up for the release of its second season.

Of course, all eyes are on Martin, who is under immense pressure from fans to close out A Song of Ice and Fire with two more books: The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring.

“I have to finish the next book,” Martin, 78, told The Hollywood Reporter in January. “The actual writing [is getting] harder. I’m rewriting. I’m struggling. Maybe I’m overoptimistic about how quickly I can write these things. I’m trying to cut back on anything that I can to clear my decks and get this done.”
