Nagarjuna and Girija Shettar’s Geethanjali will return to theatres in an enhanced 4K version on November 13, 2026. The Mani Ratnam classic was initially planned for August 28, coinciding with Nagarjuna’s birthday on August 29, but the re release was postponed as additional restoration work was required.
The delay was attributed to the team’s efforts to achieve the finest possible picture and sound quality. The 1989 romantic drama, Mani Ratnam’s only direct Telugu film, revolves around two terminally ill individuals who discover love and embrace life despite knowing their time together is limited.
Even 37 years later, Geethanjali continues to stand apart through its poetic storytelling and unconventional portrayal of love. PC Sreeram’s iconic cinematography captured Ooty’s misty landscapes, colours and intimate spaces beautifully, while the new restoration is expected to make those frames look magnificent with contemporary theatrical technology.
Ilaiyaraaja’s timeless score and songs remain central to the film’s emotional identity, while Mani Ratnam’s sensitive treatment of romance, mortality and fleeting moments felt remarkably advanced for its era. With Nagarjuna and Girija’s performances adding emotional depth, the 4K re release offers both nostalgia and a fresh big screen experience.
